About

Hello there. This blog will be documenting the technical and design development process behind the building of www.begrand.net, an innovative online resource / social web application for Grandparents.

(If that doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, blog.begrand.net might be worth checking out – it covers the people, marketing and ’soft’ stuff behind the site)

We will be covering process, front-end and backend development and will endeavour to document the whole development process as much as we can. We will be building the site in Acquia Drupal, on a 960.gs base theme, deploying to an Amazon EC2 instance, using an agile development methodology. Sounds like fun, eh?

My name is Rik Abel, I’m the Interaction designer and I will mostly be talking about frontend stuff – interaction design, tools for front-end development, Drupal theming, wireframing and prototyping, UX, CSS, jQuery, grids, and ‘designing for the social web’. Which is nice.

Mike Richardson is the Drupal Developer and will be talking about the system build, configuration and custom modules that we will be using. We’re building Phase 1 of the site using as many off-the-shelf modules as we can and then developing custom modules for the areas that need specific functionality.
